[net.rec.photo] NIKON FE2 Query

simon (05/19/83)

Took delivery on my new Nikon FE2 two days ago. Ordered
it with the Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 macro lens (which has a $20
rebate deal). The two make an unbeatable combination.
Have not had a chance to run any film through it, but I
assume it takes pictures as well as my old FE. Yes, it
does have shutter speeds to 1/4000 and synchs flash at
1/250. The users manual claims that both of these are the
fastest in 35mm photography. Other changes from the FE are
a light in the viewfinder that tells you when you have the
exposure compensation dial set to anything other than 0.
There is no battery check light on the rear of the camera.
To turn the meter on you must pull the rewind crank out to
its ready position and then slightly depress the shutter
release. I have always liked the old way better (even if
there was a chance of killing the battery by leaving it
turned on). The meter automatically turns off after 16 sec.
The hot shoe has three extra contacts that set the shutter
speed to 1/250, light a ready light in the viewfinder (actually
in the eyepiece) and meter the flash light directly off the
film plane. You must have the Nikon flash, of course.
I am outrageously pleased with it, can't wait to try it out
in the Canadian Rockies in two weeks.
