When my ancient telephoto lens died recently, I had a perfect excuse for buying a zoom. At the local photo store, the salesman worked hard to convince me the best buy for the money was a discontinued 80-200mm Kiron lens for $159. He claimed it compared favorably with the Canon lens (I have a Canon TLB). Does anyone have any helpful comments or suggestions? Thanks Jeff Hillis BTL-IH ...ihuxf!jhillis

I'm willing to believe that the "sharpness" of my cheapo competes with that of my Nikkor telephotos, but I regularly find myself leaving the zoom on the shelf. Why? Mostly because the cheapo has really poor anti-reflection coating. Every time the zoom points anywhere near the sun, the picture contrast drops sharply. So that's another thing to look out for when choosing such lenses.
