I took pictures during the delivery of my son (Kevin, 6/29/83, 9 lb. 1 oz.) using the new Kodak VR1000 film and had quite satisfactory results. I would recommend an ASA 1000 film since I had to shoot at 1/60 with aperatures of about f/2.8 - f/4. The trend in many delivery rooms is to have the lights similar to normal room intensity which would certainly rule out anything less than ASA 400 (most hospitals that do permit delivery room photography do not permit use of flash equipment). Color balance was quite good with the VR1000. I highly recommend taking as many pictures as you can since the intensity of labor (particularly with natural childbirth or minimal anesthesia) causes many women to miss details of the event. A tape recording of the procedings would also be a good idea (I missed getting the recorder started because of all the activity). Be sure and check your camera settings when you first get into the delivery room - things will be happening fast when the delivery is really under way.
