I made about a dozen prints from one of these, and was not impressed. It is expensive to operate (~$1/print). It produces small prints, smaller than the 3-1/2 by 5 or whatever it is you normally get from Kodak. The one I used completely washed out the highlights, and if I adjusted it darker to compensate, it just chopped out the shadows instead. Compared to prints made by Kodak, it just doesn't look very good. But it is a whole lot faster, and you don't have to let your slides out of your sight to be manhandled by lab techs. You can also be sure the print isn't backwards, which 3 of my last 12 prints from Kodak were.

The "other" slide printer is made by Polaroid and seems to be of much better construction than the Vivitar (metal instead of plastic, etc.) and gives more latitude as far as changing colors (dichro' filters) and exposure. Unfortunately, the price seems to be a bit more (~$229.00 vs. ~149.00 list) and it hasn't started beeing sold out here on the west coast yet. Polaroid was offering an $80 rebate on it when it first came out so the price may drop. Stores in nYC are selling the Polaroid at a price that`s effectively $99.95 after rebate; check ads in the NYTimes (Sundays, Sec. 2)
