[net.rec.photo] long term *dry* storage for slides?

jerryp@tekig1.UUCP (08/26/83)

I live in Oregon -- in the rainy part of the state -- in a basement apartment.
Needless to say, it's damp. Some of my things have gotten moldy. I don't
want that to happen to my (thousands of) slides!

Can anyone suggest a good way to keep my slides dry? I store them in metal
bulk-storage files (about 18" wide x 8" deep) that hold 800 loose slides.

  * Do those "air-drying crystals" from the hardware stores damage/fade film?
  * Anyone seen large, air-tight containers -- that don't cost *too* much --
that'd hold 8 or 10 of my slide files?
  * I think Kodak recommends a relative humidity around 30 or 40%. Any
experience with long-term storage in air that's dryer than that?

Thanks...
