I have a Canon A-1, which I am *very* pleased with. The features and flexibility it offers (as well as the quality) make it ideal for serious amateur work. When I went to buy a zoom lens, my local dealer recommended Tokina lenses. They are actually manufactured by the same companies as the more expensive name brands, but Tokina puts their name on them, and sells them at a more reasonable price. The two zooms that I have are the 28-85mm Macro, and the 80-210mm one-touch (ATX). I am very please with both lenses, but the 28-85mm is so useful that it has become my default lens. The large range from wide-angle to semi-telephoto lets you crop very easily, and the macro lets you get as close as 9 or 10 inches from your subject. -Theo Pozzy (decvax!dartvax!cmi)
