Is my Topcon D-1 35MM SLR worth fixing? I just got a repair estimate of $212 (after the local camera shop guy who sent it in figured about $30) to fix a slipped blade in the focal plane shutter. Given that cameras, like stereo gear, have hardly gone up in price over 15 years but now offer more features, (I bought the Topcon used in '68 for $190), my decision should be simple: kiss it, buy a new SLR. HOWEVER: I have two other lenses, telextender, macro extension tubes, etc. The Beseler Topcon uses (used? are Topcons still made?) the same mount as Exacta (3-prong bayonet, very quick for changing lenses), so plenty of lenses used to be available. The local camera shop guy claimed that NOBODY uses that mount anymore, so I couldn't use my lenses if I junked the Topcon. Are Exactas still made? Is this guy wrong? Also, my 15-year old Topcon worked flawlessly up to the day the shutter slipped, and is built like a tank. The new Japanese SLRs seem to be more plastic & microchips and less steel. Do they hold up? As for features, the Topcon has thru-the-lens light metering (meter in the mirror) and viewfinder exposure meter, plus the lens doesn't stop down till you shoot. Can't read the F-stop or shutter speed thru finder. Oh yes, the Topcon regular lens is f1.8 and very sharp -- used to hear great things about Topcon lenses. SO: --must I junk my lenses along with the Topcon, or --can I buy something new (or not so used) that will use my lenses? Please reply soon, as I have only a week to decide, says the camera shop. Thanks, mike k
