The Vivitar 3500 (with Canon-dedicated unit, of course) will suit your AE-1
fine. To "run in dedicated mode" you must do two things to the flash:
Set the film's ASA
Select one of several apertures, depending on how
far away your subject is.
The camera will read this info from the flash, automatically set the
speed to 1/60th, and the match the aperture with the one selected
on the flash, regardless of the current settings on the camera. All
this will happen *if the flash is ready* when you take the picture.
If the flash is not ready, your camera will ignore it. Hence, you don't
have to mess around with the camera's settings at all.
I have a Vivitar 3500 dedicated flash for my Canon A-1, and it performs
beautifully. The head has 3 zoom positions (for ~28mm, ~50mm, ~70mm lenses)
and several positions for bouncing around (lightwise).
