[net.rec.photo] Flash Connection Problem

I have what I would consider to be a very strange problem and a possible
diagnosis, but no cure. I would appreciate any help in either confirming
my diagnosis or rediagnosing the problem and in solving it.

First a little background information. I recently bought a Minolta X-700
camera and the new Sunpak MX-2D module for the 422D flash. That is the
module which allows X-700 owners to take advantage of the TTL flash feature
of the camera when using the 422D flash. I also use a Sunpak cord which
acts as a dummy module and connects to the flash on one end, and attaches
to the dedicated module on the other end.

My problem is that my flash works fine with the module attached directly to
the flash, but when I use the extension cord to get the flash out of the hot
shoe, it won't fire on releasing the shutter. I should add that my MX-1D
module (for the non-TTL flash-metering Minolta cameras) works fine with the
cord, both for my XD-11 and my X-700.

My diagnosis is that the cord is not meant to interface with the MX-2D module.
First, is this diagnosis correct? If not, what is the real cause of my
problem? Second, what is the solution? If my diagnosis is correct, does
Sunpak make another cord which will interface with the MX-2D module? I
really don't like the lighting effects caused by using the flash in the hot
shoe and would like to be able to get the solution working before some photo-
taking situation crops up. Sure, I could always use my other module, but
then I wouldn't be able to take advantage of the TTL flash metering (and I'm
a filter nut, especially this time of year when most people could use an
artificial tan).

Thanks ahead of time for any help.

It sounds like the problem could be in your flash; why not call an expert?

For all Sunpak owners:

Sunpak Product Manager: Gary H. Stone
President, Berkey Marketing Companies: Richard Darrow

Telephone: 212-932-4040

25-20 Brooklyn-Queens Expressway West
Woodside, New York 11377

Gary Stone should be able to answer your question. He has been the
product manager of Sunpak for quite a few years now. Those guys
at Berkey Marketing often receive phone calls from users of their
equipment and sometimes can help. One would hope that the
marketer/distributer of a product knows something about how it
works.
