[net.rec.photo] Info request on Olympus OM-4

hoj909@hou2f.UUCP (C.BOHRINGER) (04/27/84)

I am considering to buy an Olympus OM-4 and would appreciate any
comments on that camera. Since I don't know much about Olympus cameras
in general, I'm also interested to hear about any experiences with
other Olympus models.

Thanks, Christian Bohringer

(The line eater must have been full when this went by!)

I spent a lot of time evaluating cameras, and talked to a couple pros,
before buying my OM-2. I've been using it for a couple of years, and
would not trade it for anything....except an OM-4. I tried out an OM-4
at a local camera store and was impressed. It provides you with the
tools to be creative yourself, rather than a 'programmed' mode to make
the decisions for you. The shadow, highlight, and spot averaging modes
are much more valuable to me than a do-it-for-you mode. I haven't
put any shots on film, but from my OM-2 experience, I'm not worried.

The 4 min. plus automatic exposure (in standard auto. mode) is a nice
thought also, although I know nothing about it's accuracy.

My only reason for not rushing out and buying one right now is $$. As
soon as the price comes down a little (which it may or may not) or my
photography starts bringing in more income, my OM-2 will become my
backup. By the way, when I order I like to use BH photo in NY. They
never try to hide costs any almost always will be as economical as any
other mail order. They have monthly ads in all the photo magazines.

No info on the OM-4, but I've been happy with my OM-2, and I know
several ppeople with OM-1's who like them, too.

I have found, however, that the OM2 tends to overexpose when
used with its fance fully-automatic flash.

This month's (May) issue of Modern Photography magazine has a test of
the new OM-4 that you may find helpful. I have an 0M-1n with the zuiko
85mm f/2 and the 35-70mm f/4 lenses. I have never had any problem with
any of my equipment.

As long as the major source of revenue for "fan" magazines is advertising;
I would read equipment reviews "with a grain of salt" and "between the lines".
Has anyone out there ever read a *bad* equipment review of a product from
a major manufacturer/distributer/advertisor?

P. S. I could be more specific but I don't want to be sued for libel by
my former employer ( Berkey Marketing Companies ) or a family friend,
Sid Holz, Publisher of one of the major mags.

Has anybody out there compared the OM-4 with the Nikon FA?

I owned a Canon A1 last year for a short time (had it ripped off out of my
car), and I am currently close to replacing it with a new camera, but unsure
of what to buy.

I am a novice to photography and enjoyed the A1 for what little time I
it, but since I am going to lay out $$ again, I want the most value I can
get. (Plus all the gizmos that I may/may-not ever use and a camera that
will not be considered obselete in the near future).

 The costs are relativley close. OM-4 w/1.4 = $480.00 +/- FA w/1.4 = $560.00 +/-. (N.Y. prices, but could be bargained down in person).

Considering my expertise, does anyone advise one over the other, planning
to shoot some nature studies in rugged country (will one take abuse better)
or is there anything I should be aware of????

Would appreciate any info to help decide on what kind of camera to lose next.

  Thanks in advance.
