[net.rec.photo] Recommendations on reliable cameras for non-photographers

warren@ihnss.UUCP (Warren Montgomery) (09/20/84)

A while back I asked this group for recommendations on a reliable
camera for someone who needs to use a camera, sometimes in rugged
conditions, like backpacking, but who isn't interested in the art of
photography. Automatic exposure control and maybe a simple lense or
two covers all needs.

I got several recommendations for the Cannon Sure shot, which I have
since been to look at. The folks at Lyon photo recommended a
similar Ricoh model over the sure shot. I have seen a lot of
similar cameras sold under other brands. These cameras are quite
different from anything I have used, having mechanised film
handling, automatic focus, and no exposure controls. I would be
interested in some opinions from users about them, as I have no way
to judge what is good or bad. In particular:

1)	How reliable are the automatic film loading and advance
mechanisms. Having ruined a few roles with bad loads
myself, I'm all for it, but I don't know how well they work
	or hold up.

2)	How long do the batteries (2 penlite) in these things last?

3)	Does the autofocus system really work? Do you have problems
shooting through trees or other near in obstacles?

4)	How does the all plastic construction of these things hold up?

5)	Is there any way to find out whether the light and focus
conditions are acceptible with these cameras? Point and
shoot is fine, but you are really guessing about what is
	going to happen next!

Send any comments to me directly.
