From: luria@ucbdali (Marc Luria) I'm interested in buying a good flash, but I'm a bit confused as the ME does not take advantage of many of the automatic features of many cameras. I read the August Issue of Consumer Reports, and they mention some top-rated flashes like the Vivatar 5600 that produce a good image with a flash, but I'm not sure if that would be overkill. On the other hand I've had some cheaper flashes over the years which have failed repeatedly, and I'd like something good. Any suggestions?

Some of the other Vivitar flashes (3700?) have special adapter modules for camera controlled flash. If you have a plain ME as opposed to ME Super, etc, I recommend the Vivitar 285. It is relatively compact, powerful, and flexible. It is a good general-purpose flash unit. It may be quite a bit more than you need. It lists for $130 CAN and I think it's about $70 US if you find the right discount store. The 5600 you mention is more a very portable professional unit. Unless you know you need the features, save some money. I have not looked much at Metz units because I thought the Vivitar had more flexibility. Herb... I'm user-friendly -- I don't byte, I nybble....
