[net.rec.photo] Request 35mm camera recommendation

wally@cornell.UUCP (Wally Dietrich) (12/12/84)

I'm curious about something. You've got one camera from each of the big
five, plus a Ricoh. How did Ricoh get in there.

My recommendation is the Canon A-1 or T-70. I have an A-1 and am very happy.
There are situations when more versatile metering systems and program modes,
such as the ones on the T-70 and other very recent introductions are handy.
I think the A-1 has some features the T-70 doesn't have, like shutter
stop-down for depth of field preview.

You'll probably be happy with any of the cameras you mention. Be sure to
try them all out for weight and handling.

Olden Camera in New York is OK, as far as I know. If you can buy the camera
locally for an extra $20 I think it's worth it, just to avoid the hassles.

I'm in the market for 35mm SLR automatic. I'd like full programmed
automation (so my wife or any other novice can use it) as well
as aperature and/or shutter preferred auto exposure and full manual.

I'm considering the following and would greatly appreciate any
comments or suggestions on these or any other cameras. They seem
similar in features and price. Which do I buy ???

                          Canon A-1
                          Minolta X-700
                          Nikon FE2
                          Olympus 2S
                          Pentax Super Program
                          Ricoh XR-P

P.S. Where do I buy it? Has anyone had any experience with a discount
mail order place - like those in the back of the Photo magazines.

                                          Thanks in advance,
                                          Jan Holliday

All the cameras you listed are remarkably similar and you
will find people who will defend each one of them as being
"the best" and you shouldn't buy any of that other "junk."
I chose the A1 because of LED display for the meter (I can
see my settings better in low light) and the general "feel"
of the camera (as well as manufacturer's reputation).
Others will say the same about why they chose the Super
Program, etc., etc.

The answer? You have to play with all of them and choose
for your own reasons. You will be using this camera, not us.
And they are ALL good cameras.

Now just a darn minute! Your statement suggests that Ricoh is some
backwoods company like Seagull or Diana. I'll have you know
that you are insulting my favorite camera company. Ricoh may not
have the reputation of Nikon or Asahi, but they have been making
high quality, innovative cameras for a long time; the only thing
the Ricoh XR-P lacks is snob value and its associated high price.

Put that in your stainless-steel tank and develop it.
