[] Ben Berkey died on Sunday, December 16, 1984 at his home in Scarsdale, NY. He was 72 years old. He was the founder of Berkey Photo, Inc. and the retired President and Chairman of the Board of the Corporation. Mr. Berkey founded the Company in 1933 with a $500 loan from his mother. At the height of the company's success only Kodak and Polaroid were larger. Berkey Photo was and is the second largest independent photofinisher in the USA. Ben Berkey was one of the first importers of photographic equipment from Japan and Germany after WW II. He pioneered the concept of the wholesale photographic industry. He founded Peerless Camera stores and bought Willoughby's. Willoughby - Peerless is the largest photographic store in the world. In addition, the Colortran division won an Academy award for advances in professional movie lighting. He was a prominent philanthropist. Funeral services will be held this Thursday in Scarsdale, NY.
