I'm sorry but I can't reply personally to Fritz from this site. Yes you usually do sacrifice something when using zooms, especially a zoom that ranges from wide angle through normal to medium telephoto. Now... I THINK Tokina has a 35-200 and it should be a respectable lens. Kiron is due to relase a 28-210 in Feb and it should be a respectable lense. Quantaray has a 28-200 but I don't have the nerve to buy one. Osawa has a 50 - 300 that I tried and found acceptable but it is not in the WA to TELE range. Tokina has a 50-250 that looks very sharp at the macro setting but I have not seen the other ranges. Anyway... if you look at the lense tests in MODERN PHOTOGRAPHY you will see that zoom teles have usually do NOT have the same clarity throughout all focal lengths and usually all teles are less sharp than their fixed length siblings from the SAME vendor. E.g. NIKON tele-zooms are usually inferior to NIKON fixed teles. But differance in quality is usualy only apparent in low light situations or high blow up in printing. I have an FE2 with: 50mm 1.8 NIKOR my sharpest lense 43-86 nikkor which I tend to use as my Normal lense in most indoor situations 75-150 series E which i use for Macro and most outdoor work 25-50 Nikkor on order just to have a WA a 2x Nikon extender to get me to 150 300 range. Now I am tempted to get a Tokina or a Kiron Wa to Tele when its available but it will be for convenience only!!! I doubt that either will have Nikon quality throughout its entire focal range. Nikon often seems to gaps in its test results in some of their zooms. This really should be expected from ANY vendor to be fair though. As for Vivitar: I here good and bad about their non Series 1. As for their Series 1 I have heard nothing but good about them and have seen execellent artistic work done with the 28 - 90. I wanted the 28-90 and 70-210 pair but got such lucky prices on used Nikon lensews that I never got them. I think you'll be happy with them especially the new 70-210 f2.8. Try getting them on special or mail order (yeah I read the horror stories..:-)...). AS FOR STICKING WITH NIKON... I LOVE THEIR OPTICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A super lense is the 75-150!!!!!!!!!! Crisp at any f stop and any focal length I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Vince Marchionni 215 565 3300 ext 240 V6M at PSUVM.BITNET
