After shopping around, I've almost always bought from a local store.
The best deal I ever got involved a trade. I traded my used Nikon FG body
(B&H sells new for $149) and $300 for a new Nikon FA body (B&H sells for $399).
I had only paid $220 for the FG WITH standard lens a year before from another
local store. At that time the NY stores were selling them for about $200.
Before that I traded my Olympus OM-1 and some cash for a Vivitar Series 1
70-210. So another nice thing about the local stores is that they will
trade and they will bargain. I let them know I'm looking at the New York
prices but that I'm not asking them to match them, only to come as close
as they can. When they see that I'm not swayed by the horror stories they
tell me about the NY stores they usually start dealing.
