I tend to like a more manual operation also, but when you are talking
about Photographic Art (capitalization significant), wouldn't you say
that composition is the key issue?
I think the best camera would be two cameras: a program-type like a
Nikon FA with a zoom lens, and a manual FM2 with a complement of
fixed lenses and a light meter. Get both in black, carry 'em both around
your neck and you'll be a Mr Macho professional photographer.
