Some time ago, I made the observation that a lot of photographers use the Nikon Macro lens as a normal lens. Some people responded that the macro would be good for close ups, but inferior to a normal lens for longer distances. Well, I was thumbing through some Nikon Handbook on Lenses and I looked up the 55mm MicroNikkor. What I found was somewhat interesting. The book claimed that while originally the lens was designed primarily for close up work, it also turns out that the lens produces the sharpest image (highest resolution) of any Nikkor lens, "surpassing the quality of any film emulsion." That book looked pretty interesting. Next time, I hope I have the $$ to buy it.

Summary: Expires: Sender: Followup-To: Distribution: Keywords: I quite concur. I used to use my Nikkor 35mm f2.0 as my standard lens but if I just take one it's now my 55mm 2.8 macro. A wonderfully designed lens, and the extra stop added a few years back makes it usuable for most applications. It's also available at a very reasonable price. For the record, I also have a 50 f 1.4 but it sits on a shelf most of the time. I haven't used it in quite some time, but I remember thinking it was an extremely sharp lens when I used to use it alot ten years ago. So I guess that also indicates the quality of the macro.
