[net.rec.photo] Recent mail-order experiences

Recent experiences with Labelle of Maine and Adorama:

I ordered a Tokina 35-200 f/3.5 zoom from Labelle. It arrived 8 days
later; unfortunately, the salesman who had taken my order could not
write, and the lens had a Canon mount instead of a Nikon mount. Called
them up, and they said no problem: ship the lens back, and we'll send
you a new one. I didn't want to do that, since I needed the lens right
away. Ok, they said; order another one (which arrived OK in 8 days),
send back the wrong one, and we'll credit your credit card. They didn't
charge shipping on the replacement lens.

I ordered a Nikon SB-16B flash and a Tenba camera bag from Adorama. The
flash arrived 7 days later. The bag had been back-ordered; I decided to
buy a different bag locally, and they cancelled the bag order with no
hassles.

I haven't gotten my credit card bill, so I don't know if they've credited
my account yet. For the savings ($50 on the flash, >$100 on the lens),
I would say it has been well worth my while to go mail-order. Of course,
I haven't had anything break yet, either...

Anyone have experience mail-ordering film (and processing)?

I just bought a Tokina SMZ 80-200 zoom for my Nikon FG ($122), and 20 rolls
of Agfa 200 ($4.89 incl. processing) from Focus in Brooklyn. I am quite
satisfied with the materials, and they shipped it quite soon: I got the
package in four working days (but then I'm in NJ).

I use Kodak mailers for processing slides with complete satisfaction.

<Is there still a line eater?>

I just ordered a Nikon MD12 motor drive for the FE2 from B&H Photo of
New York City (where else). I found out that International Warranty
meant that you get a slip of paper with Japanese writing on it, plus
B&H was kind enough to bill me twice. I will NOT do business with
them again.

Camera World in Portland Oregon is a nice place to shop. I have never
placed a mail order with them, but I had an old friend that worked there
and he said they never sold any non-US warranty equipment with one
particular exception, where they warranted the equipment themselves
for a period of 5 years. I've never had any complaints about them,
other than it took about 30 minutes in line to get to talk to my
friend.

Good luck.
