I think that all of the good secondary lenses are optically comparable. One real difference is whether they are one-touch or two-touch. My experience with both indicates, to me at least, that the two-touch is easier to use (providing that the lens focus doesn't change when you zoom). I know the Tokina ATX 28-85 is two-touch and a very good lens. They are around $100 by mail order.
