I have been using a modification of the Zone System on 35mm as well as with cut film. When you get down to the use of the system, it permits you to place a segment of the photograph of a specific segment (zone) of the gray scale. Thus, your whites come out white rather than gray. By the way, if you can get close enough to the subject, any light meter will do. Just take a close up reading. mike schneider
