[net.rec.photo] Mirror Lens: Summary

jans@orca.UUCP (Jan Steinman) (09/04/85)

As promised, here is the summary of responses to my request for information
about mirror lenses. It appears not too many people use them -- it took a
re-posting to get this many responses -- and those who do, don't seem to use
them often. I have not yet purchased, but am leaning toward Olympus.

I use a Celestron 1000mm f/11. It is an excellent optic at a surprising
price. It also comes in a 500mm f/5.6 version.

I have a Nikkor 500mm f/8 (the new one)... light and dependable are the only
words that come to mind. I don't buy non-nikkor glass anymore. Nuf said?

i to have used the 400 mm 5.6 and found it fine the only mirror lense that i
have is a 1000 mm f11 celestron c90 it has some problems as sold yoy have to
re work the baffeling to cut down on stray light and there is some curvature
of field and vignetting i understand that these problems are worse in
celestrons 500mm and 300 mm lenses

I just bought a mirror lens at the beginning of the summer but I doubt that it
will help. It's the Zuiko 500mm F8.0 for the Olympus OM2. It's very small
and quite sharp. I haven't noticed any hot spots and only slight loss of
light around the edges. The other lens I considered was the Sigma 600 mm
which was, I *think*, a 5.6. It was a very large lens, particularly when
compared to the Zuiko.

The Zuiko was about 230 dollars, the Sigma was substantially less, maybe $160.

Well, OK you got my attention this time. I purchased a 500 mm Tokina f8 lens
for my Olympus OM-1 several years ago a few days before I was going on a bike
trip through the mountains. I got it because it was "small" and light.
Although I have taken a number of pictures with it that I think are quite
good, I cannot say as I have warn it out. It is more the need for such a lens,
or lack there of, than the quality that is the issue. I have used it for close
focused pictures (of a mushroom) as well as detail longer shots. Like I say I
like the lens, it works well, and it is easy to handle (with a tripod). I have
had a number of unsucessful attempts at birds with it, but that is my fault
not the lens.
