I heartily agree, lens hoods do make a difference. You get less flare,
and generally higher contrast.  I have found that lens hoods provided
by manufacturers are conservative, they make them short to avoid
vignetting (sp?).

When I am doing "studio" photo's (portraits, wedding shots), with fixed
focal length lenses, I use rectangular lens shades that I've
constructed.
