[net.rec.photo] Zoom lenses

mls@harpo.UUCP (11/16/84)

There have been some comments on zoom lenses. I have a Cannon
70-210. Although it is on the large size I have been very
happy with it. I have not noticed any lack of sharpness. In fact
I have used it with the Cannon 2x extender and it still looks good.
However those shoots were taken froma tripod. One thing to keep in
mind is that the minimum shutter speed is roughly 1 over the focal
length so generally one should be shooting at 1/250 for hand held
shots.

This is my first response to net news so here goes...

I have had great success with a lens that has not received much
publicity -- the Tokina 35-200 f3.5-f4.5 zoom. Mine is in AI-S mount
for Nikon FA. It, my 24 f/2 Nikon, and my 35 PC (to deal with recal-
citrant buildings) carried my too well through China last spring --
too well in that I had far too many good slides for a reasonable show
and discarding became truly painful. Also, when I finally set up my
darkroom and started printing slides using Agfachrome Speed (another
phenomenal product), I found that the zoom had taught me (or allowed
me to develop) so many good habits about seeing and cropping and fram-
ing and composing, that there was little if any further cropping
needed to come up with some very good prints.

I own a Pentax ME super camera and would like to purchase
a zoom telephotp lense. I am willing to spend up to $150.00.
I was looking at the Tokina SMZ 80-200mm 3.5 -4.5 Macro lens.
I have several questions about telephoto lenses

1) Has any one had any experience with this lense or any Tokina lens
before. I 've read consumers Report and they seemed impressed by this
lens.

2) As far as Tokina lenses go, what is the difference between a lens
marked SMZ or ATX?

3) Does anyone recommend another lens (brand) in the same price range?

I would appreciate any responses. You could send them to me at
ihnp4!houxm!hropus!jbs or respond in the net.

Thanks.
