                  STAFF ASSISTANT/SYSTEMS PROGRAMMER
                  
            Department of Computer and Information Science
               University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA

     The Research Computer Facility of the Department of Computer and
Information Science is seeking to add to its staff a systems programmer with
networking experience to assist us in the expansion of a local area network
composed of twelve VAX processors running VMS, two Symoblics 3600
Lispmachines, and  several SUN graphics workstations running UNIX. This person
will be responsible for developing the coherent set of network protocols and
utilities needed to support an active research community working in such
diverse fields as computer vision, artificial intelligence, distributed
processing, office automation, and robotics.  Applicants must have at least a
M.S. in computer science(or a B.S. and 1 to 2 years professional experience),
a working knowledge of operating system internals(either VMS or UNIX) and
network protocols.  Salary is in the range of $23,000 - $28,000 depending upon
qualifications and a good fringe benefits package is included. If you are
