Programmer - ONCOCIN Project: Stanford University School of Medicine
				  Heristic Programming Project

	We are seeking an experienced LISP programmer for a position that
involves applications programming for a large medical expert system project
known as ONCOCIN. This project, under the direction of Ted Shortliffe
(Principal Investigator) and Larry Fagan (Project Director), represents an
application of AI techniques to the treatment of cancer patients, and an
initial prototype running on a DEC-20 is currently in daily use by
physicians. The job requires significant experience with artificial
intelligence techniques and LISP, preferably Interlisp. The applicant must
be willing to work closely with other programmers and to master a large
existing expert system. Masters level training in computer science and
previous experience with personal workstations are highly desirable (we are
transferring the system to Xerox 1108 LISP machines). The individual's main
function will be to take responsibility for the development and management of
the knowledge base for the ONCOCIN system, including the development of
routines for knowledge base examination, enhancement, and verification.

Although the tasks required will be varied, the emphasis will be on
artificial intelligence aspects of the oncology research work:

	*Lisp programming in support of the knowledge base development;

	*close interaction with clinical collaborators;

	*testing the knowledge base to insure integrity and appropriateness;

	*participation in the design as well as the implementation of
	 system capabilities;

	*documentation of the system on an ongoing basis (system
	 overview/description as well as software documentation);

	*supervisory coordination of students and part-time programmers
	 who may also be working on related projects;

	*assistance with occasional non-programming matters important to the
	 smooth running of the project and to the efficient and effective
	 performance of the system in the clinical environment;

	*assistance with system demonstrations for visitors and at meetings;

	*assistance with preparation of portions of annual reports and
	 funding proposals;

Salary is competitive and will follow Stanford University guidelines for a
Scientific Programmer III in accordance with the level of training and prior
experience.
