From GSB@MIT-MC Thu Jun 21 21:39:03 1984 This is to inform all interested persons that Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India, is interested in recruiting faculty for its Computer Science department. Abrief description of the department is given below: The current faculty strength is around ten, and their interests cover areas like Software, Hardware, Analysis of Algorithms, Mathematical Theory of Computation, Artificial Intelligence, Numerical Analysis, Computer Graphics (CAD/CAM). The department takes about 20 undergraduate students every year (the first such undergraduate batch was taken in 1978 and this batch has graduated and doing quite well, more than 70% were accepted in Universities all over the US). The department also takes in around 20 graduate students every year for their MTech (equivalent to MS here) program and around 2 or 3 for their PhD program. The main computer at IIT Kanpur is a DEC-system-1090 and has the following peripherals -- 2 lineprinters, card-readers(obsolete though), tape drives, disk drives, graphic terminal, plotters, and a large number of terminals -- 20 VT52s, a couple of VT100s, around half a dozen hard-copy terminals, and lots of other Indian terminals. The DEC-10 is linked up to other small computers in the department like the Cromemco, TDC-316, a WIPRO computer and an IBM1800 computer(which is currently used only for realtime control). The department has a lot of interaction with Indian industry, most notably in the area of CAD/CAM (eg. TELCO). I have put up this notice on the request of Prof. Abhay Asthana, a senior professor at Kanpur and who is visiting USA right now. He is immediately interested in getting hold of as many interested persons as possible especially graduating Computer Science PhD students. If you have any questions regarding this, please send then to: SANKAR@SCORE (at Stanford University) or in case you wish to speak to Prof. Asthana, you can call him at: 503-681-4350(office) 503-629-5544(residence) (these are Oregon telephone numbers).
