[net.math] Putnam Exam questions

avr@CS-Mordred (Andrew V Royappa) (11/05/84)

	Hi, a couple of requests:

I'd like some info about the Putnam Exam (like
when to take it, how to apply, etc). I saw a brochure here
but couldn't find out where to apply (maybe I didn't look
hard enough).

What I'd really like is samples of the kind of
problems one is likely to encounter on the putnam exam,
the more the better.

As always, thanks in advance ...

A previous year's Putnam exam problems are published in
American Mathematical Monthly. Eventually they become part
of a book.

It's sponsored by the

    Mathematical Association of America (MAA)
    1529 Eighteenth Street N.W.
    Washington, DC 20036

and given in December of each year. Your local Mathematics Department
should arrange for your application, etc.

Each year the American Mathematical Monthly (available in most
university libraries) publishes the previous Putnam Examination, listing
winners, solutions, etc. In addition, there is a book, "The William
Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition -- Problems and Solutions:
1938-1964", by A. M. Gleason, R. E. Greenwood, and L. M. Kelly, which
covers the first 25 competitions. It is published by the MAA.
