The new Chair

     A second Chair of Computer Science has been established, and the
University invites applications for the post.

     The first established Chair is held by Professor Sidney Michaelson.
A Personal Chair in Computer Science is held by Professor Rod Burstall; he
has been awarded an SERC Senior Fellowship, to be held in the department for
5 years from October 1984.   A Personal Chair in Computation Theory will be
held by Professor Robin Milner, as from 1st October 1984.  The present
Chairman of the department is Mr Peter Schofield.

     The new Professor will be expected to stimulate fundamental research
into some aspect of computing systems, for example VLSI design, computer
architecture, concurrent computation, distributed systems, programming
environments, databases.  He or she will be expected to encourage the
integration of his own research with that of others, both in Computer Science
and in the other Information Technology Departments, particularly Artificial
Intelligence, Electrical Engineering and Physics.   He will be expected to
participate in the teaching of the department and will play an active part
in keeping the syllabus and teaching methods under continuous review.

     The Chair will be formally established on 1st October 1984 and it is
hoped to fill it as soon as an appropriate incumbant can be selected.

One Lecturer or Computing Officer
One Temporary Lecturer (2 years)
One Temporary Lecturer or Computing Officer (3 years)

     Applications are invited for Lecturing and Computing Officer posts in
this active and expanding department of Computer Science.   At least two of
the posts will be filled by candidates specialising in some area of Computer
Systems (hardware or software); the third could be filled by a specialist
in Theory of Computatin.  One post is permanent; one post is for two years,
to replace a Lecturer awarded a Royal Society Fellowship; one is for three
years to replace staff awarded British Petroleum Fellowships.   All three
posts are available from 1st October but the dates of appointment can be
adjusted to suit the best candidates.

The closing date for the above vacancies is 25th September 1984.
