The DEC Facility  at SRI International  has a three  job openings  for
Systems Programmers.  Our  facility currently  operates two  DEC-2060s
running TOPS20,  one VAX-780  and  one VAX-785  running VMS,  and  one
Pyramid and one PDP11/70 running UNIX.   We are looking for a  systems
programmer for each operating system.

DUTIES:

Working alone  and  in company  with  other systems  programmers,  the
successful applicant will work with software sources, analyze aberrant
systems behavior and correct  problems in operating systems  internals
as well as miscellaneous utilities.

Assistance with software  development and maintenance  tasks on  other
computer systems  will also  be required.   Development of  networking
utilities is a large part of these tasks.

In addition, coordination of hardware maintenance tasks with  vendors,
and assistance  with the  hardware  and software  acquisition  process
(including configuring new computer systems and subsystems, evaluating
products, negotiating  with  vendors, and  coordinating  installation)
will be necessary.

Writing documentation which  includes internal software  descriptions,
operations procedures, user manuals, and justifications for  equipment
acquisition and consulting with  users, operators, other  programmers,
and management as needed will also be part of the job.

Week-end work, off-hours work, and on-call support will be required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Good communications skills will be required to interface with computer
users, other programmers, operations staff and management.

Demonstrated  expertise  in  and   indepth  understanding  of   system
architecture, internals  and  utilities, assembly  language.   Working
knowledge of several high-level  computer languages (such as  FORTRAN,
ADA, PASCAL, BASIC or  COBOL) is also a  must.  Some familiarity  with
other systems is desirable.

Experience with high-level  network applications  is essential.   This
includes electronic  mail,  file  transfer,  terminal  emulation,  and
network  spooling.   Experience  with  the  underlying  hardware   and
protocols is also desirable.

Experience in  any of  the  following areas  is desirable  though  not
required: (A) Accounting,  especially computer  usage accounting;  (B)
Public speaking; (C) Technical writing and copy-editing; (D)  Software
project management.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor in  Computer  Science  or related  discipline  or  comparable
knowledge.
