          The Computer and Information Science Department of the University

     of  Massachusetts, Amherst, seeks a senior computer scientist to serve

     as  Professor  of  Computer  Science  and  Chair  of  the  department.

     Candidates   should   have   a   record   of  distinguished  research,

     administrative experience, and a desire to be a leader of  a  growing,

     research-oriented computer science department.



          Over the past five years,  our  department  has  undergone  major

     expansion,  resulting  in  the  development of an outstanding research

     environment and high quality graduate and undergraduate programs.   We

     currently  have  23  faculty, 15 research computer scientists, and 200

     graduate  students,  with  the   expectation   that   we   will   grow

     significantly   over   the   next   five  years.   We  have  developed

     internationally recognized programs  in  Artificial  Intelligence  and

     Brain  Theory,  Software  Development,  and Distributed Computing.  To

     support our research, we have a 25 node network of  VAXs,  SUNs,  LISP

     machines,  and  Graphics  Workstations.  We feel that our department's

     strength and  cooperative  research  environment,  combined  with  the

     superb quality of life available in the Amherst community, make this a

     very attractive opportunity.



          The starting date for appointment is flexible, but September 1985

     or before is most desired.
