         Faculty Position -- Computer Science

Hampshire College intends to fill a regular faculty position in
computer science in its School of Communications and Cognitive
Science. The opening is at the Assistant Professor level; the
initial appointment will be for a term of three years, starting
in the fall of 1985.

Hampshire supports a college-wide computer studies program and a
cognitive science concentration. Candidates should have a
primary teaching/research interest in artificial intelligence,
but should also expect to teach general computer science courses
in an interdisciplinary environment. Sensitivity to the needs of
women computer science students and to the role of women in the
computing professions is a major concern of the search
committee. The College is committed to excellence in classroom
and tutorial teaching. The normal teaching load includes two
courses per term and supervision of student independent study.

There are currently two full-time faculty in computer studies and
six in cognitive science. A VAX 11/750 running VAX/VMS and many
microcomputers are dedicated to academic use. A local area
network links terminal clusters and personal computers with
academic, library and administrative computer systems.

Hampshire is an experimenting liberal arts college, located in
Amherst, Massachusetts, approximately a two-hour drive from
Boston and three hours from New York. Founded in 1970, the
College is allied with Amherst, Mount Holyoke and Smith
Colleges and the University of Massachusetts in a unique
academic consortium. The setting provides a flexible
small-college teaching atmosphere, coupled with the stimulus of
nearby graduate research departments in computer science and
computer engineering.

Candidates should forward resumes, a statement of their teaching
and research interests, and three letters of reference to:
Richard Muller, Chair, Computer Science Search Committee,
Hampshire College, Amherst MA 01002. [MULLER.UMASS-ECE@CSNET-Relay]
Applications should reach the College no later than
February 15, 1985. Hampshire College is an Affirmative
Action/Equal Opportunity employer.
