     The Navy Center  for  Applied  Research  in  Artificial
Intelligence  (NCARAI)  needs  an  innovative,  vigorous  AI
researcher who enjoys working with motivated people to serve
as  a Special Assistant to the Manager.  In addition to per-
forming his own research, the Special Assistant will help to
direct  projects at the AI Center and select new challenging
avenues of AI research for Navy application.   We  currently
have projects in:


*    EXPERT SYSTEMS

     -    Maintenance and Troubleshooting

     -    Combat Management

     -    Radar Classification

     -    Operational Planning


*    NATURAL LANGUAGE

     -    Message automation


*    DISTRIBUTED PROBLEM SOLVING

     -    Multiple Sensor Information Integration

     -    Adaptive Search and Control

     New projects such as vision and speech will be added in
the  future.   The  Center's  staff  is  growing and is ack-
nowledged as the leading AI facility within  the  Department
of Defense.  The staff is encouraged to publish in the lead-
ing technical journals and to present papers at the  key  AI
Conferences such as IJCAI and AAAI.

     Applicants  should  have  proven  technical  management
skills  and  experience in marketing research programs, ini-
tiating state of the  art  AI  programs  and  making  strong
technical  presentations.  This is an opportunity to address
the challenge of bringing AI research to  fruition  in  real
applications,  while  working  with  leading  AI researchers
within the Navy, DOD, universities  and  corporate  research
centers.

     The position is  at  the  GM-15  level  in  the  career
Federal  service  ($50,495 -$65,642).  Interested applicants
