From: Robert Port <port%indiana.csnet@csnet-relay.arpa> Linguistics Jobs Indiana University has three positions available for linguists in the Department of Linguistics -- at least one of which is appropriate for a computational linguist. These jobs are at the junior level and are at present guaranteed only for the year 1985-1986. But there is a good chance they will become permanent lines. Position 1. SYNTAX AND SEMANTICS, with demon- strated abilities in current approaches to syntac- tic theory and semantics; skills in computational linguistics are advantageous; Position 2. GENERAL LINGUISTICS, preferably with an inter-disciplinary perspective; expertise in African, Amerindian or Asian languages would also be an advantage. Position 3. SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION, includ- ing a background in TESOL preparation programs and second-language research; Candidates for each position should have a PhD degree, a broad background in linguistics and be prepared to teach general courses as well as in their specialties. Candidates should send an application letter, curriculum vita and three letters of reference along with a description and sample of current research by February 15, 1985 to the department chair. IU is located in the remarkably attractive town of Blooming- ton, Indiana and has an active Computer Science Department that is closely affiliated with Linguistics as well as close bonds with speech research laboratories elsewhere on campus. The department has its own pdp-11/60 running unix for faculty and student research, a department library and a phonetics lab based on a pdp-11/23 also running unix. I will be happy to reply to any netmail regarding these posi- tions or our priorities (port@indiana) and my phone is (812) 335-9217. Applications should be sent to: Harry L.
