From: ART GAYLORD <ART%umass-cs.csnet@csnet-relay.arpa> SYSTEMS and AI PROGRAMMERS Computer and Information Science Department University of Massachusetts/Amherst The Computer and Information Science Department of the Univ. of Mass. at Amherst has several openings for Lisp and operating systems programmers to help staff a major expansion of its already active research in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Distributed Systems. The research will be perform- ed using a large-scale, tightly-coupled multiprocessor consisting of 48-64 powerful 32-bit processors supported by a network of Lisp machines and graphics workstations. This effort will address issues that arise when a large number of processes cooperate to solve a single integrated problem. The department has 24 faculty, 18 research associates, and over 200 graduate students. We have developed nationally recognized programs in AI (including computer vision, natural language processing, distributed AI, robotics, etc.), Brain Theory, Software Development, and Distributed Computing. To support our research, we have, in addition to the computers listed above, a large network which includes 14 VAXs, 13 Lisp machines, and several graphic workstations. Our department's strength and cooperative research environment, combined with the superb quality of life available in the Amherst community, make this a very attractive opportunity. The openings are as follows: LISP SYSTEMS PROGRAMMER -- Will assist in the enhancement of Common Lisp and its support environment for our multiprocessor and should have experience with Common Lisp and its implementation, assembly language programming, utilizing system calls, and building large, complex software systems. TWO AI/LISP PROGRAMMERS -- Will assist in the development of AI systems to investigate various problems in distributed processing and intelligent user interfaces, and should have experience programming in Common Lisp, implement- ing AI architectures, and building large AI systems. TWO SYSTEMS PROGRAMMERS -- Will assist in the integration of the multi- processor with our existing network and development of operating system extensions for parallel processing. Applicants should have experience programming in assembly language and high-level languages, utilizing low- level system primitives, and building software systems. Additional desirable experience for all positions: experience with VAX/VMS and/or UNIX, parallel processing, networks, and supervision of programming teams. Applicants must have a B.S. in computer science (M.S. preferred) and 2--3 years work experience. Salaries commensurate with experience and the University offers an excellent fringe benefit package. Applicants should submit a resume and three letters of reference by August 26, 1985, to: Barbara Gould, Research Computer Facility, Computer & Information Science, Univ. of Mass., Amherst, MA 01003. Responses may be made over CSnet by sending to BARBARA@UMASS, but must followed by a written appli- cation. Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
