We have now had several occassions where the 'history' file disappears from a system, for no apparent reason. It seems to be during the nightly 'expire' job. The old history file is left in 'ohistory', which we can re-install as 'history', but it may take several days for us to find out that there is a problem and restore the file. (This leaves that much news not listed in the history file, and thus not 'expire'-able by normal mechanisms). Since we have 50+ netnews sites here, and have only had this problem a few times in the several months we've been using 2.9, it seems like a pretty low frequency event, but we'd like to see netnews require NO regular maintenance. (How else can 3 or 4 people maintain netnews on that many machines in their spare (!) time?). Has anyone else had this happen? Anyone see ways to make netnews more robust wrt the 'history' file (e.g. automatically re-building it if it's dissappeared)? Anyone ever build that history file re-builder rumored when 2.9 first came out? Paul Lustgarten Netnews administrator for Bell Labs - Indian Hill
