[net.news.b] common net lore

presley (04/16/83)

In the 2.10 release of netnews, there is a directory (doc) containing
the netiquette article. The idea is that sites getting the newest
release can post this article to general (it has an expiration date in
1985) so that new users will know about the net etiquette.

Since 2.10 is still in gamma pre-release, there is still time to affect
what goes into it. I propose that in addition to netiquette, items
which seem to keep popping up be put there. [Such items could be called
common net lore.] That way, maybe a person new to the net would realize
that the rest of us have already seen it.

For starters, the following items could be in 2.10:

    A bunch of lightbulb jokes.

    Paddy O'Furniture

    What UNIX stands for.

What rc (as in .newsrc) means.

How to delete files with funny names.

Bones and his "I'm a doctor, not a ..." quotes.

"Complaints to /dev/null", "flame on/off", and "not afraid to sign
    ...".

IBM -> HAL (the quote from Clarke would be appropriate).

Reagan, Falwell, rabbit!jj, Mick Jagger, etc. = 666.

How to spell (there, they're, their), (its, it's), (your, you're),
    etc.

    How not to spell.
