Some while back there was a modification to readnews posted so that it
wasn't so painfully slow when initializing a .newsrc on a system that had
been about for a while. It did this by opening the directory instead of
vainly stat()ing its way up the line. Can somebody replace my now missing
copy of that, or suggest a reasonable alternative?
