[net.news.b] WHY is our 'active' file getting trashed?

Sounds like your have lines like the following in your active file:

	net.flame 00012
	net.news.group
	net.sources 00003

If you had an active file like that, when inews received an article
in "net.news.group", it would write the new number in place of the
five digits you see there at the end of the line.  OOPS.
