[net.news.b] senduuname: a safe, site-controlled use

gam@amdahl.UUCP (G A Moffett) (06/03/86)

Summary:

"senduuname" is one of the control messages you can send via Usenet.
It causes the recieving site to send the output of uuname(1) for that
machine, or (here's the good part) any other designated program.

For our site 'amdahl', we send a copy of our Usenet/UUCP map entry.

This might be a good general use for the senduuname control message,
since most sites probably don't want to send the unedited output of
uuname(1) to any requesting site.

So, while it has been suggested that the senduuname control message
should be deleted from future versions of netnews, I suggest it be
retained and each site provide its map entry when it receives such a
control message.

(You can disable the effect of "senduuname" for your site altogether
but obviously I'm not encouraging that).
