With the good news that the FAA has granted an STC for Cessna 150's
with Continental o-200 engines to use unleaded auto gas the cost of flying
will be reduced. Even better is the news that the FAA is considering extending
the STC to all aircraft with gravity feed fuel systems and using 80 octane
avgas. This will be the first time policy has been changed from granting STC's
on a make and model basis.
This will not only reduce fuel costs from $2.05 to 1.25 a gallon
(Midwestern prices), but will also avoid the new $.12 a gallon tax.
The EAA test program showed beyond a shadow of a doubt that the use
of auto gas will not cause problems, and also revealed that the reason for
the vapor pressure rule was a case of mistaken identity of carburetor ice.
