From: Hon Wah Chin <HWC at S1-A> Does anyone have any experience with or information about renting a 152, 172 or small Piper (or similar) in the New York City area? Is it a reasonable thing to do to get into the area, check out with one (which ?) of the local FBOs and hop around; or is it more trouble than it's worth? Pointers to reasonable FBOs would be useful. Thanks.

I would expect little trouble renting an airplane in the NYC area. There are at least a dozen airports within a 50 mile radius that have FBOs that can rent a single-engine Cessna, Piper, or Beechcraft. I doubt the list includes Kennedy, Laguardia, Newark, or Westchester, and don't know about Flushing, but I would expect that any other metropolitan area airport would have an FBO

I used to fly in to Flushing until they closed it for all except aircraft based there. Now I go to Teterboro. Much better. Nicer airport. FBO's that care. NO landing fee. Bus to downtown just as fast as bus-subway from Flushing. I don't know if they have rentals, but I would contact them. They are actually in NJ.

The NYC area is highly congested with heavy traffic. This makes it at least undesirable if not impossible to cross the NYC TCA. The closest FBO with the most services appears to be in Teterboro, N.J. The field is less than a half hour drive from midtown Manhatten and is generally easier to get to than most other general fields. The last time that I was there, planes of the 172 variety rented for $26 an hour. Check with any of the 3 or 4 schools on the field for the best rate. Other fields in the area are Westchester County Airport (rather far away actually) and Republic field near Hicksville Long Island. I don't have any info on these except for their ease of access. Long Island can be hard to get to during rush hour and most weekends. Westchester is a longer drive.
