The ILS plate for runway 23 at Morristown, NJ depicts a clockwise "racetrack" holding pattern at the outer marker/NDB. The outbound course from the marker is 047; the inbound is 227. Say you are approaching the OM enroute on a northernly heading, ie. you are south of the marker. My instructor said the proper way to go from the enroute phase to the approach is to fly to the OM; track the outbound course for one minute; make a 210 degree left turn and head directly for the marker; at station passage, turn right to get on the racetrack and proceed around it to pick up the inbound course. That seemed cumbersome to me, so I asked why not simply fly to the OM, pick up the outbound course for a minute and then execute a teardrop procedure turn to the inbound course. Is this allowed, given that the chart only depicts the racetrack? My instructor said it sounded logical, but he didnt know if it was legal. Kurt Olsen rabbit!kco
