[net.aviation] IFR Holding patterns

Schauble.HDSA@M.PCO.LISD.HIS@sri-unix (12/03/82)

For each holding pattern, ATC sets aside a rectangular area of airspace
so many miles by so many miles (I can't remember the numbers). Once you
enter this area, you may not leave it without clearance. ANY entry or
holding procedure that keeps you entirely within the assigned area is
legal. Your proposal is legal as long as you make your teardrop on the
same side as the holding pattern, i.e. within it.

You will, however, get a few odd looks from instructors and examiners.
