For each holding pattern, ATC sets aside a rectangular area of airspace so many miles by so many miles (I can't remember the numbers). Once you enter this area, you may not leave it without clearance. ANY entry or holding procedure that keeps you entirely within the assigned area is legal. Your proposal is legal as long as you make your teardrop on the same side as the holding pattern, i.e. within it. You will, however, get a few odd looks from instructors and examiners. Paul
