[net.aviation] being a safety pilot can be down-right risky, it seems

After checking the regs and rethinking it, I wonder if I'll ever
fly safety again.

1) Are you current and checked out on the particular machine?

2) Are you sure the insurance would cover you?

3) Did you do a weather check yourself, Notams?

4) Did you study the plane's numbers (performance and limits),
the papers, radio station, engine logs?

5) Do you have an understanding with the pilot "under the hood"
that you might grab the plane on a hunch of problems?
even though that might most likely prove later to have
been unnecessary? If one does not get a clear understanding
beforehand, one might be reluctant to grab the stick later,
and the safety pilot seems to get the wrath of the FAA
more likely than the primary pilot.

All in all, sounds like a tricky problem to be left to the professional
instructor.
