[net.aviation] Fly and camp

danny@alice.UUCP (08/16/83)

I'm looking for a source of info on airports that allow camping on
the field, or have camping areas adjacent to the field. The best
I've been able to come up with is the AOPA airport guide, but I find
that only marginally useful.

Please send replies to me; I'll summarize for the net.

There's a book entitled "FLYING -- Off the pavement" which deals
with fly/camp situations. Author Link Grindle, LaSenda Pubs
(S. Laguna, CA), ISBN 0-918916-01-1. You might be able to order
it from the publisher (32331 Coast Highway, S. Laguna CA 92677).

It has a chapter on specific camping places, but this chapter is
only six or seven pages. The Overview of specific places is longer,
just over 20 pages.

Be wary of old information about camping on airports. The concern with
airport security of the late 70's and early 80's eliminated some
camping opportunities.

As a specific example, it used to be possible to camp on the grounds
of the Schweizer (sailplane) flight school at Elmira. In fact, we
expected to camp there the first time we went up there. However, the
Elmira airport had been secured, and the security fence surrounded
the flight school. Everyone must now be out at night. It's a shame,
too -- it's a nice camping area.

between Galveston and Brownsville on the Mexican border is a long chain of
islands, with many airports, usually not on the sectional map, and not
accessible by road. people love to land and swim for the day, or camp
overnight. I have not done it yet, but plan to. It might be illegal
to use some of those "closed" strips, but I have not heard of any problems.

anyone know more about these particular places, or landing on off-coast
islands , in general?
P.S. I forgot to mention, that between Corpus Christi and the Mexican border
are about 100 miles of park and wildlife refuge with minimum altitude
restrictions - don't scare our birds, please.

P.S. just checked the Brownsville and Houston sectional. the only
non-private airports are Mustang Beach, off Corpus on Mustang island
	and Galveston.
