I'm looking for an out-of-the-way airport for a relaxing weekend with the airplane, my sleeping bag, three books, and me. Ideally, it'll be a turf runway, unlighted, unattended. The place should be moderately cool (i.e. not in the Central Valley of California), within about 4 hours VFR flying in a 172 from the San Fransisco Bay Area, and preferrably in the mountain foothills (i.e. not over a large mountain range). Any suggestions? I expect that California, Oregon, and Nevada pretty much cover the states that might fit the above. If you know of a place that almost fits my dream, let me know -- it may be as close as we can come in this age of VASIs, REILs, TCAs, and ILSs (all valuable in their places, admittedly, but.....). It is a small (1900 feet) grass strip very close to the beach. I don't know if there is a problem with camping under your wing (check with the Oregon Dept. of Transportation, Aeronautics Division), but there is a regular state campground within walking distance of the strip. I believe that the airport is only open part of the year so you best also check part 2 of the AIM. My Flight Guide has the following remarks on Wakonda Beach State at Waldport Oregon: 40'; 3 South of town; Unattended; Prior Permission Only; Soft/wet; power lines north; Runways 16/34-1900ft. I think the "Prior Permission Only" has to do with the restricted number of days that the field is open. I suspect that the "grass" turns to something closer to a swamp in the winter. I hope you have brushed up on your short/soft field takeoff and landings. Dan Park {hp-pcd,teklabs}!orstcs!dan
