There is a voice response system that will give weather
information. I have found it very useful because it gives the
complete report and not just what the briefer decides to tell
you. It is slow enough so I can take notes.

It gives the weather observed at the airports (hourly sequence
reports), the terminal forecast, and winds aloft forecast at
three altitudes(plus or minus 4000 ft from the requested. It
also gives the TWEB routes forecsts for which you have to know
the numbers.

To use the service call

202 347 3222

It will respond with a beep and give a voice message
asking you to enter airport identifiers.
You need a 12 push button dial.
ABE is entered as
21 22 32 ##
EWK is entered as
32 91 72 ##
The first number corresponds to the button
with the letter and the second number corresponds to
the relative postion on the button.

For winds aloft forecasts the altitude is in hundreds
of feet. 60## equals 6 thousand feet.

Gee, that's great! If I give it identifiers for California
airports will it give me the weather out there? Are there
numbers (phone) that are toll free if called from the west
coast? How busy is the line, does it take several times
dialing the number before getting a ring. How long is the
breifing for say a 600 mile trip with four stops?

The Voice Response System does give transcribed weather info and other
information of direct interest to pilots. Although at one time it was a
test system, it has been made permanent. Unfortunately, there are only two
access numbers neither of which is toll free. One in Columbus, Ohio
(where I am currently... how lucky eh?) and the other in Wash. DC.
The DC number is (202) 347-3222. The Cols., Oh. number: (614) 461-1659.
The basic requirements are that you have
access to a 12 key touch-tone phone and a little time. A document entitled:
	The Voice Response System
can be obtained from the FAA. I obtained my copy from the local FSS so
try there first.
I can send you more info if you so desire. Drop me a note by mail..

Apologies for sending this to the whole list, but my mail system won't
take zillion-character recipient names.

I'd like to try out the Voice Response System - could you send me more
info on how to work it? Thanks.
