[net.aviation] Falkland-Rumour: reason for Sheffield-sinking

CMP.WERNER@UTEXAS-20.ARPA (12/17/83)

From: Werner Uhrig <CMP.WERNER@UTEXAS-20.ARPA>

For careful consumption:	Heard yesterday:

The reason for the successful sinking of the British ship
Sheffield was that the Exocet-missiles, of French (NATO) making,
was mistakenly identified as a "FRIENDLY" missile by the British
"Friend-or-Foe" defense system. The British were GREATLY alarmed
and, immediately, sent down a programmer team to reprogram their
software. Successfully so and at great speed, as the Argentines
were unsuccessful in all further attacks against war-ships with
the hardware and software to do "Friend-or-Foe" recognition.

What d'you think of that one? I was intrigued .....
