[net.aviation] SEARCH FOR WW II VINTAGE PLANES - HELP NEEDED

mvg@afinitc.UUCP (Mark Grieshaber) (02/16/84)

First greetings to all! Might I request some assistance?

I am *EARNESTLY* searching for a WW II era vintage plane. All classes
are of interest (trainers, fighters, bombers, transports), any type.
Condition is no object, I am itching to jump into a major renovation
project, so a plane that has not flown for 20 years is great. I am
totally willing to take a plane in *ANY* condition, at *ANY* location.

"Uncle Harry had a friend who used to..." type leads are fine, so long
as I can figure out how to contact Uncle Harry's friend. I know such
beasts exist (last month I found a T-6 in poor shape - The owner had
*GIVEN* it away not too long before...), I just have to root them out.
Incidentally, to those of you who may be enjoying(?) our shores as a
foreign land, after WW II tons of these surplus planes made their way
to other countries' air forces (almost all of South America, India, and
many of the Southeast Asian countries, for example). Would any of you
have relatives/friends/acquaintances either in the appropriate branch
of the military, or who might know or be able to find out about any
	residue from long ago?

*ANY* leads or information as to planes or pieces of planes would make
my day, so please, if you know or can find out anything, mail it to me?

	Many thanks,
	Mark

To all those who responded to my first article, many thanks! To all the rest
of you, *yes* I am serious about this quest. I am aware of the problems and
the costs, and am willing to continue. Perhaps I should have mentioned that
I am familiar with the CAF, the EAA, the Warbirds, and government surplus (no
WW II vintage stuff remains- it was all broken up and smelted long ago).
However, I really appreciate the contacts (however vague) and leads. I am
currently following the ones I have. I am *still* (forever) looking for new
leads (names of people, airports, etc are great). Thanks a lot!
